The Outer Temples of Angkor

Day 6 · 27 November 2024

Our first full day exploring Angkor took us beyond the main temple circuit to four very different sites: Pre Rup, Banteay Srei, Neak Pean and Preah Khan, from towering brick sanctuaries and intricate carvings to water temples and jungle ruins.

Our first full day exploring Angkor took us beyond the best-known central temples to four very different sites.

We began at Pre Rup, with its tall brick towers and elevated terraces, before continuing to Banteay Srei, famous for its remarkably detailed sandstone carvings. From there we crossed the long causeway to Neak Pean, set within the waters of the former reservoir, before ending the day at Preah Khan, a much larger and more atmospheric complex of courtyards, corridors and tree-lined ruins.
